Abstract
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is highly infectious disease of cloven-footed animals, particularly cattle, sheep, pigs and goats and caused by FMD virus. For its rapid and extensive spread through susceptible animal populations, it is one of the most important animal pathogen on the global scale and outbreak can lead to tremendous economic consequences. Characteristic manifestations of FMD are vesicles in the mucosal membranes of mouth, foot and teats. In cases
of FMD outbreak, eradication by slaughter is desirable. Humans can also be infected by FMD virus, though the incidence is extremely low. This review summarized causative agent, clinical features, diagnosis, control measures and risk of infections in humans of FMD.
